What is Osteoarthritis?
The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis is characterized by damage to the cartilage of any joint in the body. Joint pain, stiffness, joint swelling and decreased range of movements; are the most common symptoms of osteoarthritis. If not taken care of, it worsens over time and becomes incurable. There are numerous causes of osteoarthritis including aging joints, obesity or injury. The treatment of this disease is based on the type of joint affected: hand, knee, wrist, back or hip.

The Ayurvedic treatment for osteoarthritis involves herbal oil treatments, sudation therapies, which are provided by Ayurvedic specialists. Some of these treatments are:

1. Abhyanga
It is one of the most effective therapies for joints and tissues, and includes a warm oil maasage or anointment. It is usually carried out by two therapists who work in a synchronizing manner applying strokes throughout the affected area, for about an hour. This massage is used for rejuvenation, relieving pain and smoothening the skin.

2. Kati Basti
This therapy is used to relieve pain in the lower back. This procedure involves formation of a circular reservoir using gram dough, in which warm medicated oil is poured gradually. The oil is kept in the reservoir for a minimum of thirty minutes, and then refilled. It helps in strengthening the bones and rejuvenating the nerves.

3. Janu Basti
This is an Ayurvedic treatment for knee pain, and in this process, warm medicated oil or herbal decoction is poured all over the knee joints. This can be practiced on both the knee joints or on one of them, depending on the nature of the patient.

4. Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda
It involves preparation of a decoction of Sidacordifolia roots; it is then boiled with equal amount of milk. Shashtika rice is cooked in a portion of milk, and tied into boluses. These boluses are then dipped in the other mixture and rubbed throughout the body until sweating starts to appear.
