Benign Breast conditions

Often referred to as benign breast disease, are common changes within the breast that are not associated with breast cancer. Often we hear the term “fibrocystic disease” but this is not a true disease but more a catch all term for the lumpiness and changes that occur in our breasts over time.

These may include

  • lumps or lumpiness,
  • Breast discomfort and pain,
  • Sensitive nipples,
  • Itching
  • Fibroadenomas.

Typically these symptoms may change throughout the menstrual cycle and usually stop after menopause. Sometimes, fibroadenomas can increase in size and some women will choose to have them surgically removed.

What’s important to remember  About 60% of premenopausal women will have benign breast disease at some point in their lives and that eighty percent of all breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous).  

Breast Abscesses

They are infections that would  need immediate attention.Symptoms would include

  • Breast pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Fever.
