Everybody is aware of Heart attack- the blockage of the arteries supplying the heart which is life threatening if not treated at right time. Similarly, blockage of the arteries supplying the limbs may be limb threatening and at times may be life threatening. There might be gradual narrowing of the arteries ( due to wall thickening - atherosclerosis) which eventually leads to complete blockage of the artery/arteries.There is also possibility of sudden blockage of the artery due to clot formation within the artery ( at the site of the diseased artery due to atherosclerosis ) or there might be a clot dislodged from the heart or anywhere from the major arteries arising from the heart. The process of atherosclerosis is triggered in the Diabetics, hypertensive or in a person with high cholesterol. Any form of tobacco either smoking / snuffing / tobacco chewing also leads to narrowing of the arteries wherein the process of development of blockage of the artery is very different.
Anyhow the progress of thickening of the arterial wall varies from person to person.Accordingly  the presentation of the symptoms also vary from individual to individual. An individual may have generalized atherosclerosis affecting the entire arterial tree but may NOT HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS.

Alarms to seek vascular surgeon consultation:

A)  Symptoms related to slow and progressive narrowing of the arteries

    - Pain in the lower limbs aggravated on walking.
    - Non-healing wound not responding to treatment of dressing/medicines.
    - Blackening of the toe/ toes termed as gangrene.
    - similarly complaint of pain / fatigue in the upper limb.
    - Can also present with gangrene of the finger/fingers.

B)  Sudden blockage of the arteries

    - Sudden and severe pain in lower/ upper limbs
    - Numbness in the limb
    - Coldness of the limb noticed by the patient himself / herself
    - Inability to move the limb / limbs
