Happiness – How do you define happiness?

It is a state of being.  The definition of happiness varies from person to person. Each and every being pursues happiness. Some equate happiness to procuring material things, attaining a goal, promotion, perfect health etc. that take up a sizable part of their life. Of course one cannot put down any of these.  For others, the things that define happiness may take a longer time to get accomplished.  The pursuit might take so much of your prime time and energy. So, the question is, in the craziest chase of things that define happiness, are you missing some beautiful moments in the present?  Are you missing the actual happiness the present moment has to offer? Are you missing the happiness that small things can offer in your pursuit of bigger accomplishments?

Happiness can be derived from small things – non-material things.  The atoms of happiness are present around you.  A warm cup of coffee on a calm afternoon, loving touch from a caring person, a smile from a stranger, colourful rainbow in a summer rain, cosy bed after a tired day, warm hug by your children or partner.  These are the small moments that make you feel happy in the present.  These are the little moments which we often overlook and forget to appreciate.

It is initially difficult to start enjoying the present after years of brooding over the past and worrying about the future.  It is helpful to slow down a bit and start observing the world around you; the environment you are in and the people around you.  Children are the best when it comes to being in the present.  They do not worry about the future or ponder about the past.  If the present is not scary, they enjoy it to the fullest by spreading happiness through giggles of joy.  A simple thing like a buffalo marching on the road, blocking the traffic would make them laugh their heart out. Let us re-learn from the children what we lost in the process of growing up – art of living in the present that fills your life with happiness.  Let us start seeing the world around us through the eyes of children.  Let us appreciate the magic the present has to offer.
