When arteries get clogged, blood flow to the heart reduces. Angioplasty is a surgery performed by the doctor to open up these blood vessels or your coronary arteries so that blood supply to the heart is restored to normal.

In many cases, a stent is inserted into the artery to ensure smooth blood flow and to prevent the artery from narrowing down again. An angioplasty is usually performed immediately after a heart attack. The sooner it is performed, the more effective it is and prevents future attacks. Also, if you have symptoms of a heart disease, it relieves them and prevents chances of a heart attack.

How is it performed?

The patient is given a local anesthetic after which the doctor makes an incision in the arm where a catheter is inserted. The catheter has a tiny balloon on one end and is inserted into the artery. With the help of X-rays and other supporting actions, the catheter is guided to the blocked artery. From this position, the balloon is inflated which pushes the deposits and widens open the artery. In many cases, the catheter is additionally equipped with a stent to prevent the artery from narrowing in again. This procedure clears blockages and ensures blood flow is smooth.

How is this procedure beneficial?

This procedure is very important and successful in saving lives. The method is very effective in restoring blood flow quickly which prevents damage to the heart muscles. Also, for someone who is suffering from heart attack symptoms like chest pain or breathlessness, an angioplasty can prevent heart attacks or further complications. When done on time, it prevents the requirement for an intensive surgery like a bypass.
