Chemical peels are treatment procedures that help improve the overall appearance of the skin. As the name suggests, it involves application of chemical solutions in required areas of the skin.
What does it do?
The chemical solution causes blistering of the skin which peels over a period of time making way for new skin to take its place. It is beneficial as it:
- Reduces fine lines
- Treats onset of wrinkles
- Lightens scars
- Can help with acne
- Age spots
- Sun damage
- Overall look and feel of skin
Chemical peels should always be performed by a professional and never self-administered. The skin is cleansed thoroughly before the solution is applied. Peels can be used on the face, neck, hands etc. or on particular external scars and pigmentations.
Depending on the results desires, skin condition etc. there are different types of solutions used:
- Glycolic acid
- Trichloroacetic acid
- Salicylic acid
- Lactic acid
The solution is applied to the desired areas to create a controlled wound which peels away old skin and allows new skin to grow.
The person may experience burning and stinging sensation during and sometimes after the procedure as well. In some cases where it is deep peeling, pain medications are administered. After a couple of days, a sunburn like reaction occurs after which there is redness, peeling and scaling of skin.
It is important to avoid exposure to the sun after a peel and use a good sunscreen as the skin is more prone to sun damage after the chemicals are used. Depending on the skin’s response and results desired 2-8 sessions may be required to see results with about 2-4 weeks spacing between each session.
