What is a Ligament?
A ligament is a short band of tough and flexible fibrous tissue that connects the bone of the body together.It connects bone to cartilage or bone to bone in the body and strengthens and supports joints. The function of the ligament is to keep the skeleton in correct alignment and to prevent unusual joint movements.
What is a Torn Ligament?
Ligament injuries are common in athletes and may occur in any joint. When the joint is underlined beyond its normal range, ligaments tend to be stressful. Twisting or landing of ligaments abnormally can cause ligament injury. This is most common when the ligaments surrounding a joint are at full stretch, causing tearing from the bone.
Ankle ligaments such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL), and Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) and knee ligaments are the most common torn ligaments in athletes. The reason for this is that every change in the direction of sport or full contact sport, the weight of the joints decreases and high stress occurs.
What are the Symptoms of a Torn Ligament?
A ligament injury is usually associated with trauma that overstresses the ligament beyond its weight.

•An impaired function such as cannot run, walk or weight-bear
•Sudden onset of pain and severe swelling

Once injured, the next activity that could damage the area must be stopped until the damage is healed. The recovery time varies depending on the specific injury, but the need for rest after an injury is most important. Make sure that you have given enough time to your body to recover from any injury problems.
ICE: Cold contact provides relief from short-term pain in the wound area and also restricts inflammation by reducing the total amount of flow of the blood in the damaged area of the body. When you apply ice to the affected area, do not leave the ice directly on the skin or body. Instead, wrap the ice in a cloth or paper towel before applying it. It is recommended that the ice should be placed on the wound site after 15 to 20 minutes of an injury but no longer.
COMPRESSION: One of the most critical parts of post-traumatic treatment is compression, as it helps in reducing and limiting overall inflammation. It also works efficiently in easing the pain. Covering the damaged area into a band is an excellent way to ensure continued compression of the wound area.
ELEVATION: After the injury occurs, elevating the injured area can also help control overall inflammation.
