As the temperature drops, the winter season can wreak havoc on your health. How your body reacts to the climate change depends on how you treat it. Winter season requires extra care for your body and what you feed it.

It is important that you consume immunity boosting foods that help prevent the sniffles, cough and flu.

Let’s look at some healthy food options for the winter-

  • SOUP- Soup is the quintessential winter food, having all the seasonal goodness. Be it a vegetable broth or chicken soup, it is one of winter’s most comfortable food that keeps you warm while providing you with all the essential nutrients.
  • OATMEAL- Oats contain beta glucan which has anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties and also provides nutrients that are essential during winter. Oatmeal is rich in zinc (for proper immune function) and soluble fiber (good for heart health).
  • CINNAMON- Cinnamon adds a hint of warmth and spice to your food and contains essential oils that have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
  • GARLIC- Not the most edible ingredient, garlic contains allicin that fights bacteria and infection. People who consume garlic are less likely to catch a cold.
  • TEA- Drinking tea not only just wakes you up or provides you with warmth, it is a good way to stay hydrated during winters as we tend to consume less water during this season. Green tea, ginger tea, black tea and various other herbal teas are flu resistant and have anti-viral properties.
  • CITRUS- Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, lemons, and limes provide refreshing flavors and add sunshine to the dreary winters.
  • POMEGRANATES- Pomegranates contain folate and vitamin B and are rich in anti-oxidants that lower the risk of heart disease.
  • POTATOES- Sweet potatoes have a high nutritional value. They are a rich source of fiber, vitamin A, potassium and rich in anti-oxidants. Regular consumption helps in managing constipation, improves immunity and is known to reduce inflammation.
