What is Head Transplant?

It is a surgical operation involving the grafting of one organism’s head onto the body of another. Experimentation in animals began in the early 1900s. It has many medical challenges such as,

  • Managing the immune response to avoid transplant rejection
  • Providing the continuous flow of blood to provide oxygen and nutrients.
  • Managing nervous system
  • Reliable vessel anastomosis.

Alex Carrel was a French surgeon who had developed improved surgical methods to connect blood vessels in the context of organ transplant for the first time.

In 2012, Dr. Xiaoping Ren got success in grafting the head of a mouse onto another mouse’s body. In 2013, Sergio Canavero said that he would make the human head transplant possible.

In last of 2017, a human head transplant has been carried out on a corpse in China by scientists. Sergio Canavero told this to media that a full head swap between brain-dead organ donors is the next stage and the final step for the formal head transplant for a medical condition which is imminent. The operation was led by Dr. Xiaoping Ren, a surgeon who has already performed a head transplant on a monkey.

A Russian man, Valery Spiridinov, has already agreed to be the first patient alive to undergo surgery. He said that he is afraid that he really doesn’t have many choices as he suffers from a muscle-wasting disease (Werdnig-Hoffman disease). He said that he doesn’t want his head to be transplanted into the body of the woman. When he wakes up he still wants to be a man.
