In vitro fertilization, also known as IVF, is a specialised infertility treatment that involves using fertility drugs to stimulate the ovaries for development of multiple eggs. The eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using a small needle. They are then fertilized with healthy sperms in a specialized lab. The embryos grow for 3 to 5 days in incubator before one or more is placed into the uterus.

IVF is the most successful infertility treatment for almost all patients, including those with the following-

  • Ovulation problems
  • Fallopian tube damage/obstruction
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic adhesions
  • Poor semen quality
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Prolonged infertility.

It can also be used to enable preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) of embryos if there is history of previous genetically abnormal babies or history of genetic diseases in parents.

However, IVF does not make new eggs for patients, and if the uterus is incapable of implanting and carrying a pregnancy, IVF cannot solve that problem.

In post menopausal women or when the woman's eggs are of poor quality IVF can be done with help of donor eggs to achieve fertility.

IVF is a 'high end' infertility treatment which requires a specialised team of IVF consultant and embryologist. The procedure of IVF is carried out in IVF lab where air quality is maintained, Volatile organic compounds are negligible and temperature is under control.

It is a day care procedure and never requires hospital admissions. Eggs are taken out from ovaries with the help of a small needle through the vagina. No abdominal surgery is required for it.Embryos are transferred back after 3-5 days through vagina and after some rest lady can go back home amongst her family members.

IVF is the best solution of infertility problems. James Baldwin rightly said-"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced."
