Gingivitis is very common gum disease that causes irritation, redness, and swelling of gingiva, the part of gum around the base of teeth. It not treated properly it can lead to much more serious gum disease called periodontitis and tooth loss.
Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause that encourages plaque to form on teeth and results in inflammation of the surrounding gum tissues.

The doctor will review your dental and medical history and will examine your teeth, gums mouth and tongue for signs of plaque and inflammation.
X-rays are done to check for bone loss in areas where dentist see deeper pockets.
Dental cleaning is done to remove all traces of plaque, tartar, and bacterial products. This procedure is called as scaling and root planing.
