Often referred to as TBI, it is an injury that occurs when an external force wounds the brain. The consequences of a brain injury are very vast and devastating as the brain defines us, and any damage caused to it has a huge impact on our functioning.

The effects of TBI can be permanent but more often than not one can make a full functional recovery as the body heals and regains its functioning over time.

What causes a traumatic brain injury?

A brain injury occurs when a person is in a very serious accident and the entire event is so sudden and the impact is hugely shocking which causes the trauma.

Young adults and elderly are at highest risk of suffering from TBI. Car accidents, firearms, dangerous falls, and violence are the prime causes of a traumatic brain injury.

Brain trauma occurs as a consequence of sudden impact or movement within the brain and the injuries could be of many types

Open head injuries because of bullets wounds or any penetration into the skull are one of the causes behind TBI.

Vehicle crashes or serious falls can result in closed head injuries like contusions and hemorrhage where there is no external damage or penetration but internally there is damage caused because of the impact and severity.

Exposure to harmful chemicals damages vital neurons, which results in metabolic disorders.

Lack of oxygen due to conditions like respiratory failures or heart attacks could cause serious damage.

Tumors and strokes are also major reasons for traumatic injuries with long-term effects.

What effects does traumatic brain injury have on a person?

The effects of a brain injury could be immediate or even take a couple of weeks to unfold. The effects could be mild and curable over a short duration or severe leaving the person with long-term damage that might even be permanent.

If the effects of loss of consciousness, confusion or disorientation are less than 30 minutes then it is categorized as mild trauma. Severe trauma includes memory loss or penetrating skull injuries. This could result in limited or permanent impairment of functions and even speech and mental disorders.

Mild or severe, traumatic brain injuries can be devastating to not only the victim, but also the entire family and could require long-term rehabilitation therapy to sustain as well as recover.

Traumatic injuries can have a huge psychological and emotional impact on a person as well and can cause behavioral, mood-related and emotive changes. It could lead to PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder because they keep reliving that incident which causes distress and instability.

Treatment could vary from medication to emergency surgery depending on the intensity of impact. In addition, victims could use counseling or physical/speech therapy depending on how they have been affected by the situation.
