It is a serious mental disorder which is characterized by a loss of contact with reality. It is not a disease, it is a symptom. It is described as an individual has sensory experiences of things that do not exist. The person may have delusions and hallucinations.

Causes

There are many causes which can lead to this symptom. Some of them are,

  • Very less sleep
  • Alcohol or drugs like marijuana and LSD
  • Traumatic events
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Brain tumors
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease

Symptoms

  • Delusions
  • Disorganization
  • Disordered thinking
  • Catatonia
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Anxiety
  • Felling of suspicion
  • Depression
  • Obsessive thinking

Diagnosis

Early diagnosis of psychosis is not generally achieved. The milder form of psychosis that can lead to schizophrenia is left untreated for an average of 2 years. To increase the chances of early detection, the possibility of a psychotic disorder should be carefully considered in a young person who is:

  • Becoming more socially withdrawn
  • Performing worse sometimes at school or work
  • Becoming more distressed or agitated

Treatment

  • Antipsychotic drugs are the most common therapy for people with a psychotic illness. These drugs are good at reducing symptoms but they do not treat or cure underlying psychotic illness.
  • Counselling can also help manage psychosis.
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy can help you recognize when you have psychotic episodes.
  • Supportive Psychotherapy can help you to learn to live with psychosis.
  • Cognitive enhancement therapy helps you through computer exercises and group work.
