What is cholesterol?
It is a waxy substance that is found in fats in the blood. Our body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells but having high cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease. High cholesterol can be inherited but it is often the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices.
Causes and Risk Factors
It is carried through blood, attached to proteins and the combination of proteins and cholesterol is called a lipoprotein.
Low-density Lipoprotein (LDL): It is also called as bad cholesterol, it builds up in the wall of arteries, making them hard and narrow.
High-density Lipoprotein (HDL): It is also called as good cholesterol, it picks up excess cholesterol and takes it back to the liver.
Its risk factors include:
- Poor diet
- Large waist circumference
- Lack of exercise
A blood test is done to check cholesterol levels and it reports:
- Total cholesterol
- LDL cholesterol
- HDL cholesterol
Exercise and the healthy diet are the first line of defense against high cholesterol.
Common medications include:
- Bile-acid0binding resins
- Cholesterol absorption inhibitors
- Injectable medications
